If the leadership wants to start a bank, I think that they should start one the way other people have... by saving their money, pooling it with others, or maybe even borrowing it. In my opinion, it is grossly unethical to start a bank with the capitol that this CU membership has on deposit just by putting it to a vote and hiring a telemarket firm to sway opinion. Though they say they 'do not intend to become a stock issuing bank', I am sure their intentions would change when presented with the opportunity to become EXTREMELY wealthy out of this deal. We need a new board and we need to run senior management off quickly!

I did vote no, as well as my mother. I joined this credit union way back in the day when it was still Medical Community, my mother did years before me. I felt really uncomfortable with the fact that they offered inventives to mail back the vote, that you would be offered a chance to win $$, even if you voted no. That isn't legal in any voting process. Too bad the presidental candidates don't try that. More people might vote, lol~

Let me be the first to congradulate You. I am not a Member of First Basin Credit Union and now I know why. Seems to me, you have managed to expose the CEO and Board of Directors. That must have taken alot of guts to put yourself in the line of fire. Members who beleive in the Credit Union movement should be proud.

I have been interested in Your struggle since I saw You on TV. Hang in there and follow it through. In the end it paid off.

I find it funny that this Board and CEO, just keep handing you a loaded gun.

This is truly entertainment.

Success for now

Is attempting to convert to a bank good use of fiduciary responsibility? And then quitting because it wasn't going your way is even worse. From what the letter indicates to me, they are backing down only until they can figure out a better method to convince the membership to be suckered in on their plan. Can the Board be sued for their lack of fiduciary duty so we can recover our money wasted on this scheme? Can the Board be recalled? What will it take to have a recall election, someone should know the answer and post it on this website. We need a CEO that is a credit union person rather than a "banker" by heart.

Mr. Culpepper- just how confidential were the ballots? Seems to me- the horses were already out of the corral. Why bring them in?

This whole thing really concerns me as a long time Member. It even makes me question this whole convertion mess you created. Was it in " Our " best interest after all. It isn't hard to read between the lines - sometimes, it is just so apparent.

As a Member, I urge everyone, that we all need to attend these Annual Meetings and vote the Board out.
Humm !!!!!

Okay- what just happened? Were the Members opposed to this conversion winning? I'd like to find out how much of " Our " money was spent on all the letters the credit union sent out? Is that part of what I'll be getting back in reward for being a long time Member? Oh and by the way- I'd like to know just how our voting went. Seems to me someone knew this wasn't a go and decided to " Suspend " the voting. Humm !!!!
After the vote

After the vote fails how can we replace the Board and the CEO so that this will not happen again? Leadership like we have now is not looking out for the best interest of the members or the employees and need replaced.

So, has anyone gone to their mailbox today?
Interesting letter from the Board and Management !! I would still vote no, even if there is a cash payment to me upon conversion or not !!

Dear Member,

As I understand it the name is on the ballot to confirm that you are a member. The ballot however, is being mailed to an independant agency to be counted. The vote will remain anonimous.

Hope this helps!

I hope the First Basin stays a credit union that why I joined a credit union, like all the members there, if I wanted to be in a bank I would have enrolled at a bank. The only regret in this whole mess is why LULAC got involved.

We hope that by now the majority of the members who are going to vote against the conversion have realized how right they are and how important it is to convince other members to vote no. there are millions of dollors that have accumulated over the past years through the credit union that belong to the membership, these same millions will be used for the business of converting to a bank. THE MEMBERS WILL LOSE THESE MONEY that could be working for us. It is the business of the credit union to make money for the members. We get the money through lower interest rates, quicker personal loans, and many other advantages that we now enjoy. this is our money that we are trying to save. Please go out and tell other members to cast their ballots against the conversion. Every one of our votes will count. After the efforts to become a bank are defeated, it will be up to the membership to get on the board and run the credit union. With enough of us as board members, we will tell the administration of the bank what to do. Right now, all their efforts towards becoming a bank are because of the money that they stand to make off of the membership. DO NOT TRUST THEM. their plan to "just be a mutual bank and that we are still members of a mutual bank" is trying to baffle the real conversion to a real, full bank. CAST YOUR BALLOT. WE ARE DOWN TO BOTTOM LINE. YOUR ONE VOTE WILL JOIN WITH ALL THE OTHER "NO" VOTE S AND WE CAN WIN AGAINST THE CONVERSION. VOTE NO~NOW!!

I had seen a comment on this site that ballots were sent out recently. Nobody in my household have received one, (4 separate accounts / members) am I in the minority or are there lots of people who never received ballots in the mail?

It is a crying shame for a few to get rich from the hard work and savings of others and the conversion should be stopped in it's tracks. Every arguement that management has put up covers up the truth. If it was such a great idea then every credit union in the country would be doing the same thing. The whole point behind a credit union is people helping people and being a BANK is not the way to help anyone except to line the pockets of the directors and CEO. They claim the CU can't grow without this but that is an outright falsehood, there is lots of room to increase business loans and branches. I am not an ex employee, just a long time member that wants my credit union to remain a credit union. VOTE NO!!!

Thanks for creating this website!!!!!!
It is more entertaining that "My Space"
If you are too worryed abot high rates why don't you create a website that can help us, members, on how to keep credit scores high so that way if there is a need to apply for a loan there won't be complains about paying high rates.
I AGREE THAT THIS C. U. IS THE BEST! So if I was to move to mmmm I don't know away from Odessa, Midland or Andrews, I would like for my favorite financial institution to have a branch near me.
REMEMBER 02/21/08 PLEASE GO AND GET INFORMED.
PS. Just between you and me i misspelled worried.

Dear Gabe,

If you have facts about the conversion you would like to share, you are welcome to do so. Our research on First Basin is original. If you find errors in our calculations, please let us know at savefirstbasin@gmail.com.

I have studied the board's conversion proposal and our credit union's financial statements. Here are the facts:
* First Basin can already open new branches, make more home loans, and make more business loans without converting to bank. So why convert?
* Converting to a bank means the end of our one-member-one-vote democracy and loss of ownership rights for members.
* Converting to a bank will probably mean worse rates and fees at First Basin, as it has at the credit unions that have converted to banks. Why? Because we'll have to begin paying 34% of our income to the government in taxes.
* If First Basin later sells stock, as the vast majority of converted credit union have, $10 million dollars of member-ownership could end up in the stock portfolios of wall street investors and the board and executives.
* This insider gain and member loss is what happened in Dallas, and at the great majority of other credit unions that have converted to banks, both large and small.

I see no reason why we should ignore the fact that, of 75% of the credit unions converted to banks insiders made windfall profits while members lost millions of dollars in ownership and good rates.

If you can offer good reasons for us to convert our credit union to bank, i would like to hear them.

Thank you,

Letty Moreno

You didn't do ANY research in creating this website. You copied templates provided by membertrust.org. You even mistakenly posted another credit union's name in place of First Basin's. That's why all of your statistics don't add up. First Basin can't be compared to the large credit union in Dallas. We're a fraction of the size. Throwing around all of those big numbers is simply one of your scare tactics.

This website was created to inform members about the conversion.

Those of you who would like to see the conversion take place have the right to create your own website with your own information.

The purpose of this site is not for the use of making personal attacks on other members.

There was alot of research that went into creating this website in order to provide members with valuable information. The decision is ultimately ours.

Sincerely,
Letty Moreno

It seems that Joe touched a nerve! I agree with Joe and agree that we need to "SaveFirstBasin" but FirstBasin needs to be saved from the misleadings of instigators that only seek personal vengence.

Dear Joe,

I believe I am the only ex-employee who has co-founded "Save First Basin". I will reiterate, the fact that I am an ex-employee (Sr. Vice President) does not take away from the facts listed on this site.

I am here merely to inform. Members have alot to lose if the credit union converts.

If you find a discrepency on this site please forward your concerns as well as supporting documentation to savefirstbasin@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
Letty Moreno

My post directly addresses the reason for this website. It's here to mislead the community and ultimately vindicate a group of ex-employees who have nothing better to do than try to inhibit the growth of their former employer.

Congratulations! LULAC is succeeding in leading the Hispanic community down a path of perpetual ignorance. Keep it up, ladies! Like sheep, we will follow.
